Based on reporting by Cybersecurity News.
Security researchers discovered several free file converter applications that claim to perform legitimate file conversions PDFs, images, and audio but secretly install malware on users’ systems.
These deceptive apps often arrive through misleading ads or unofficial download sites. Once installed, they can deploy remote access trojans (RATs) that give attackers persistent control, allowing them to steal data or execute commands remotely.
The malware is particularly dangerous because the apps perform the advertised conversions, building trust while quietly compromising the system. Many victims remain unaware of the infection until sensitive data is stolen or the system behaves strangely.
Staying Safe from Malicious Converter Apps
Experts recommend using trusted or built-in conversion tools, avoiding downloads from unofficial sources, and running up-to-date antivirus software. Organizations should educate employees about the risks of installing seemingly useful free apps.
