Based on an official announcement from OpenAI.
OpenAI has revealed plans to begin testing advertising within ChatGPT, marking a significant shift in how the AI platform may be monetized. According to the company, ads will initially appear in the Free and Go tiers, while paid plans such as Plus and Team will remain ad-free.
The company emphasized that advertising will not influence ChatGPT’s responses and that user conversations will not be used to target ads. OpenAI stated that ads will be clearly labeled and separated from AI outputs to avoid confusion or manipulation.
OpenAI also clarified that sensitive data — including personal conversations and prompts — will not be sold or shared with advertisers. Instead, ads may be contextual, based on general session context rather than individual user profiles or behavioral tracking.
The announcement comes amid increasing pressure on AI companies to find sustainable revenue models while maintaining public trust. Privacy advocates have responded cautiously, noting that transparency and strict boundaries will be critical as advertising is introduced into conversational AI systems.
